The head-to-head record between Albion and Newcastle United stands at 49 wins apiece from their 132 meetings, although the Toon edge the league record with 46 wins to 43.
Steve Bruce’s side were the last team to play at the Hawthorns with fans in attendance just over twelve months ago when they won 3-2 in an FA Cup fifth round match while this weekend’s fixture takes place exactly 12 months since Albion’s last match in front of supporters, at Swansea City on 7th March 2020.
The sides have produced a number of high scoring encounters over the years with 22 of those 132 meetings having six or more goals. The Baggies have managed to score six of their own at home to Newcastle on three occasions with the most recent being in May 1967 when Bomber Brown scored a hat trick with Ken Foggo, Graham Williams and Clive Clark also scoring in a 6-1 victory.
Seven years early, Albion recorded their best ever home win over the Toon when it was Alec Jackson’s turn to notch a treble. David Burnside, Bobby Robson and Derek Kevan scored the other goals and the Baggies’ goalkeeper, Ray Potter, recorded a clean sheet in a 6-0 win in September 1960.
The Magpies biggest Hawthorns win came in November 1989. Brian Talbot’s Baggies were having a mixed season – having been top of the Division Two table of the beginning of the year, the last year of the 80s had not been good. They were in the bottom half of the table while Newcastle were in the thick of the promotion race.
Don Goodman equalised Gary Robson’s early on goal before Gary Brazil restored the visitors’ lead before half time. In the second half, Jim Smith’s side were a class apart and goals from Kevin Brock, Mark McGhee and Liam O’Brien secured a 5-1 victory. Ironically, such was Albion’s inconsistency, they beat Barnsley 7-0 in their next home game! Newcastle would end up finishing third and lost to bitter rivals, Sunderland, in the play-offs.
Albion’s last home win over Newcastle was in December 2015 when Darren Fletcher (pictured in that game) scored the only goal of the game.
