It was another disappointing derby defeat for the Baggies, a result that has seen James Morrison’s team fall down to 9th in the Championship table. I thought the defence looked shaky in the first half and seemingly unable to cope with Blues’ direct approach and, had it not been for another couple of outstanding saves from Max O’Leary, the deficit could have been much worse. After the break, Albion had a lot more control but lacked any real cutting edge and never really looked like scoring. I definitely felt that the team missed both Campbell and Price, and the latter’s introduction was too late, in my opinion, but I guess his minutes do need to be managed.
I thought the referee was poor throughout – he didn’t seem to want to give any fouls, which made the award of the penalty all the more frustrating. It was certainly on the soft side and there were plenty of more obvious fouls elsewhere on the pitch that Gavin Ward had ignored.
The Baggies now sit just outside the enlarged play-off places in 9th, but the teams from 5th to 10th are only separated by goal difference. Albion’s next opponents, Wrexham, are three points behind in 15th.
