Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 40 games

A 2-2 home draw with QPR means that Albion’s 40 game record from this season now matches that from the previous campaign with fifteen wins, twelve draws and thirteen defeats and 11th place in the table. Last season, Steve Bruce’s team could only secure a further ten points from the remaining six games to finish tenth. Results elsewhere on Easter Monday mean that Carlos Corberán’s team do retain slim hopes of making the top six, but it would take a remarkable run of form that just doesn’t seem likely.

Albion’s hopes are further hampered by the fact that four of those six games are away from home and the Baggies have managed just one point from their last seven matches on the road.

The only positive statistic from the current team is that the result today extends their unbeaten home run to 13 games in all competitions, the best since Roberto di Matteo’s side managed 14 matches between February and October 2010, winning a promotion to the Premier League in the process. With only two games left at the Hawthorns this season, only by reaching the play-offs will Corberán’s team be able to match the previous best home unbeaten run within a season which stands at 16, achieved by Brian Talbot’s side between October 1988 and March 1989.

Should Albion avoid defeat against Sunderland in the next home match, they will match the 13-game unbeaten home run in league games achieved by Valérien Ismaël’s team last season between the start of the season and January, but they are still some way short of the club record of 19 home league games unbeaten that was set between September 1908 and September 1909. The next best run started with Darren Moore’s final game in charge in March 2019, the first of 18 league games unbeaten (including the play-off home leg against Aston Villa) ended by the defeat to Middlesbrough under Slaven Bilić in late December that year.
