Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 38 games

Adam Reach’s first goal in a Baggies shirt was enough to earn Steve Bruce’s team a point and extend their unbeaten run to four games. They remain seven points off the top six with eight games remaining needing a minor miracle to make the play-offs.

However, there is some hope in that five of Albion’s remaining eight games are at the Hawthorns although they are on the road again for their next game as they go to Birmingham City after the international break.

Game 39 has produced some great results in previous second tier seasons with the 1-0 defeat at Brentford in June 2020 the only time that they have lost in that particular round since the turn of the century. In 2002, game 39 was the infamous “Battle of Bramall Lane” while there were some goal-filled matches in 2004 and 2008.

Gary Megson’s side found themselves a goal down at Portman Road in April 2004 with 20 minutes left before two goals in two minutes from Jason Koumas and Lloyd Dyer turned the game around – an equaliser from Darren Bent looked to have earned a point for the hosts but Geoff Horsfield popped up with a winner in stoppage time.

Four years later, there was an even more dramatic finish with Colchester United visited the Hawthorns in March 2008. Tony Mowbray’s side went two goals down early in the first half but were back on level terms by half time thanks to goals from Kevin Phillips and Chris Brunt. Kevin Lisbie looked to have stolen the points for the visitors when he put the Us ahead in the 78th minutes but stoppage time goals from James Morrison and Roman Bednár turned the match around again and kicked off the Baggies march to the title.
