An excellent performance from James Morrison’s team made it three wins on the bounce at the start of Albion’s domestic season, the last two in the league against teams fancied for promotion putting the Baggies in second place in the fledgling Championship table.
Of course, it is very early days – Ryan Mason’s team won the first two games of the league season last year and it was a start that Albion failed to maintain. However, neither of those victories was as convincing as Sunday’s win over Burnley and neither Blackburn Rovers nor Wrexham, who were the first two opponents last season, were expected to be as strong as Norwich City and Burnley were this season.
This is the 128th campaign of league football for Albion, and it is just 22nd time that they have start with two victories. Only once before has the club done so in successive seasons. The Baggies’ two seasons in the third tier, 1991/92 and 1992/93, both started with consecutive league wins, a run that extended to four wins in 1992 under Ossie Ardiles and, indeed, six wins and a draw from the opening seven games.
The win over Burnley means that Albion have lost just two the fifteen games since Mozza took charge for the match at Oxford United at the end of February. No Baggies boss has lost fewer than two of their opening fifteen games in all competitions, and none have done so since Slaven Bilić at the start of the 2019/20 campaign. In terms of league games, Mozza has lost two of his first fourteen matches amassing 24 points – Carlos Corberán earned 30 points from his first 14 games with 10 wins and 4 defeats, the last of only 13 Albion managers who have started with a better league record than Mozza.
