James Morrison’s team put in another excellent performance against one of the divisional heavyweights, for the first half at least, but couldn’t hold on to claim all three points from what was a thoroughly entertaining game. I’m sure most Albion fans would have happily taken four points from the last two games and it leaves the Baggies very much in the mix at the top end of the table.
There were some great performances all over the pitch but the midfield pair of Ousmane Diakité and Jayson Molumby were particularly impressive. Had Isaac Price or Jimmy-Jay Morgan been a little bit more accurate with their finishes, Albion could have easily been further ahead at the break, while Tammer Bany came agonisingly close to what would have been a roof-raising winner in the closing minutes.
The injury to George Campbell and the subsequently shaky performance from his replacement, Nat Phillips, are a cause for concern with the news that the American is likely to miss the game against Millwall on Saturday. He will, at least, have a further fortnight to recover with the upcoming international break, but Phillips is in need of a strong performance to recover his confidence – hopefully, he will be able to do that against the Lions.
In only four previous seasons has an Albion side bettered 25 points from the opening 14 games of a second tier season and, on three of those occasions, the team has gone on to claim automatic promotion. The outlier is the 2021/22 season when Valérien Ismaël’s team lost their way before capitulating under the guidance of Steve Bruce. On three previous occasions, a Baggies team has had exactly 25 points at this stage – in 2009/10 when they were promoted under Roberto di Matteo, in 2006/07 when they reached the play-off final under Tony Mowbray and in 1997/98 when Ray Harford walked out on the club in early December before his replacement Denis Smith failed to arrest a downturn in form.
