Bristol City’s first win at the Hawthorns for almost 30 years leaves Albion in 20th place ahead of Wednesday’s fixtures. It also means that this campaign is once again the joint worst in the Baggies’ second tier history.
In 1994, Alan Buckley’s team drew 0-0 with Port Vale to move onto 14 points leaving them in 23rd place six points clear of bottom-of-the-table Notts County with last night’s opponents, Bristol City, one place and two points better off than the Baggies. Seven years earlier, a 3-0 defeat at Filbert Street (a game I remember well) saw Ron Atkinson’s Albion also stuck on 14 points from 15 games and in 19th place in the table – Steve Walsh and Steve Moran (2) doing the damage for Bryan Hamilton’s team.
The two goals conceded means that they have let in twelve goals in their opening eight home games. In only three second tier home campaigns has an Albion side let in more at his stage. In 2019, Darren Moore’s team had let in 13 but were free scoring at the other end and were top of the table. In 1993, Keith Bukinshaw had also let in 13 from 8 home games while way back in 1946, the first post-war league season saw the Baggies let in 14 goals in the first 8 Hawthorns fixtures.
