After two disappointing derby defeats, James Morrison’s team have responded with two comeback victories with the display against Blackburn Rovers at the Hawthorns on Saturday particularly impressive. Indeed, even at 2-0 down, Albion were arguably the better side with the visitors having scored one excellent goal that resulted from an error from Pereira, and seen a loose ball fall kindly for Guðjohnsen to lash in his second. Stewart’s first competitive goal for the Baggies was well timed and, from that point onwards, it was pretty much one-way traffic.
Isaac Price’s panenka penalty was ballsy, and a one-off if James Morrison has anything to do with it, particularly as he had missed his last spot kick for Northern Ireland. He has a 100% record for Albion, however, three this season and one in the FA Cup shoot-out at Swansea City in January. The Baggies have been awarded more penalties this season than in the entirety of the previous two campaigns.
Albion’s points tally this season is the best at this stage for five years – in 2021, Valérien Ismaël’s team suffered their first league defeat of the season in game 11 at Stoke City, but were still top of the table with 22 points – the cracks in Val-ball were just starting to show. Two years earlier, Slaven Bilić’s team beat Cardiff City in game 11 to reach 22 points having suffered their first defeat of the season at Leeds in the previous midweek – they would not be defeated again until the final game of 2019, an unbeaten run of 14 games which included a six-game winning streak in November and December.
The record points tally for an Albion side after 11 games is 25 points, achieved by Gary Megson’s team in 2003/04. The title winning side of 1919/20 had the equivalent of 27 points at this stage having just beaten Notts County 8-0, but with only 2 points for a win in those days, the actual table-topping tally was 18 (from a possible 22).
