Another defeat for Albion means that this season’s team are three points worse off than Megson’s 2001/02 team that became the first Baggies side to reach the Premier League 20 years ago.
Game 30 in that season was the 1-0 win over Walsall that took place immediately following the tragic death of Jeff Astle. That was the first of a run of six successive victories that included FA Cup victories over Leicester City and Cheltenham Town that propelled the Baggies into the quarter-finals.
Only once in this century have Albion lost game 30 in the second tier – that was in 2004 when Gary Megson’s team went down 3-0 at Preston to leave them five points adrift of Division One leaders, Norwich City, but still four points clear of third-placed Wigan Athletic.
Under Slaven Bilić, game 30 was a crucial 2-0 win over Luton Town that re-ignited Albion’s promotion push earning the first of 16 points from a possible 18. That is the sort of run that this season’s side need, but it doesn’t seem too likely at the moment!
