A hard-earned point against Brentford saw Albion reach the 50-point mark at the halfway point of the season. It is a record points tally for Christmas for any Baggies side, and they also have more points than any other league team in England or Scotland.
It extends Albion’s unbeaten run to 13 games, and their home league unbeaten run to 17 matches, two short of a club record that has stood for more than a century.
Slaven Bilić’s team are now three points clear at the top of the table and, following Sunday’s results, eleven points ahead of third place. Only two other Albion teams have had better results from their first 23 games of the season, the most recent being the title-winning team of 1919/20 who had the equivalent of 51 points with a record of 17 wins, no draws and 6 defeats.
One club record this season’s team can claim is the fewest number of defeats (1) in their opening 23 games. Frank Heaven’s promotion winning side of 1901/02 are next best with 2, and they hold the ultimate results record from the opening 23 games with an equivalent of 55 points with 17 wins and 4 draws.
