Albion’s Promotion Challenge Season Comparison – 16 games

The shouts for Darren Moore’s head will inevitably be louder after a hugely disappointing performance on Humberside.

Albion started the game reasonably well, but a few misplaced passes and the confidence seemed to evaporate. The Baggies had a few chances but never looked confident in those key moments and things never quite dropped for them. After half time, they looked bright again, but performance levels dropped off as time went on and it was Hull who looked more likely to score towards the end.

In terms of the system, while there were a couple of occasions in the first half when they did get get caught, I thought the balance was much better in terms of when to go long and when not, and this defeat was more to do with poor performances at the other end of the pitch.

Dwight Gayle is obviously a big miss, but the players on the pitch at Hull have been good enough this season the score plenty of goals. As passes went astray, confidence started to drop and I feel that they were lacking leaders on the pitch to keep that confidence high. Obviously, Brunt going off injured did not help that situation, but you would like to think that the likes of Morrison and Livermore would be able to step into that role, but if they tried, it just did not work.

I’m not sure Moore could’ve done much more than bringing on Sako and Burke with 25 minutes to go, but despite dominating possession, Albion created very little.

Defeat sees Albion drop out of the play-off positions for the first time since early September and it means that this is now the worst start to a second tier campaign this century, although Moore’s Albion are only a point worse off than Megson’s successful side of 2001.
