Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 32 games

With the Baggies’ mini-revival coming to a shuddering halt at the King Power Stadium on Thursday evening, it leaves this season’s team four points behind Robson’s Great Escape team at the same stage. You can read more about the 1-1 draw at Villa Park that lifted Albion out of the bottom three in my Step back in time to 2005 piece.

This seasons’ team do have one record to their name with the 62 goals conceded being the most let in by an Albion Premier League team at this stage, beating Mowbray’s 2008/09 side and the Di Matteo/Hodgson team of 2010/11 who had both conceded 59 goals from 32 games.

In 2018, the 2-1 home defeat to Burnley, a ninth successive loss, proved to be the final match in the disastrous tenure of Alan Pardew while in 2014, a 1-0 win at Carrow Road thanks to a goal from Morgan Amalfitano (pictured) was a crucial three points in a relegation fight for the team managed, in name at least, by Pepe Mel.

In March 1986, game 32 saw the Baggies earn their first point under Ron Saunders as they came from a goal down at home to Leicester City to lead 2-1 thanks to goals from Imre Varadi and Steve Mackenzie only for the visitors to equalise a few minutes later with Tony Sealy scoring his second goal of the game. The game finished 2-2 with the point moving Albion onto 17 points, some eight points adrift at the bottom of the table and twelve points from safety.
