Sunday’s game will be the 150th league meeting between Albion and Villa and it will the Baggies’ 73rd game at Villa Park in all competitions, the Villains’ home since 1897.
All but one of Albion’s 21 away wins against their nearest neighbours have come at Villa Park with the first coming in September 1899 when Chippy Simmons and Ben Garfield found the net in a 2-0 win, just five months after Villa recorded their biggest win over Albion, a 7-1 thumping.
The Baggies’ most recent win at the venue was in February 2019 when Hal Robson-Kanu and Jay Rodriguez (pictured) both scored just before half time to secure the points, although Villa would have their revenge in the play-offs a few months later.
19th October 1935 was a rare high point in a disappointing season for Albion. They finished the season in 18th place but Villa finished three places and three points worse off and were relegated. The Baggies suggested the gulf in class was much bigger when they visited Villa Park and won 7-0 thanks to four goals from Ginger Richardson with Ted Sankey, Jack Mahon and Stan Wood also scoring.
Another memorable October victory for the Baggies in Witton was some 23 years later in 1958. It was a few years after the height of Vic Buckingham’s tenure at the club, but they rediscovered some of the gold dust that day when they recovered from going behind to Ken Barrett’s opener for the hosts to score through David Burnside, Derek Hogg and Bobby Robson before Don Howe wrapped up a 4-1 win with a late penalty.
