Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 31 games

The Baggies’ victory over Southampton saw them record back-to-back Premier League victories for the first time since Darren Moore’s side beat Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur in April 2018. Those were both 1-0 wins and the last time that the Baggies won successive games in the top flight by more than one goal was way back in February 2012 when Roy Hodgson’s side followed up the famous 5-1 win at Molineux with a 4-0 thumping of Sunderland.

Allardyce’s Albion are now four points better off that Pardew’s team were in 2017/18 and, despite suffering an eighth successive defeat in game 31, the Baggies board would give Pards one more game before showing him the door.

In 2005, game 31 saw Albion beat Everton 1-0, which you can read about here, moving them onto 27 points and only behind 17th-placed Southampton on goal difference. The following season, Robson’s side also had 27 points from 31 games but their momentum was going in the opposite direction. They were not yet in the bottom three but they would earn just three more points that season and were relegated.

Going back to Albion’s worst ever season in 1985/1986, game 31 was Ron Saunders’ second game in charge and saw the Baggies battered 5-0 at White Hart Lane with goals from Gary Mabbutt, Mark Falco (2), Tony Galvin and Chris Waddle. That result left Albion nine points adrift at the bottom of the table and some thirteen points from safety.
