Albion’s Premier League Season Comparison – 14 games

Albion’s winless run in the Premier League extended to twelve games as they threw away a two-goal lead against Newcastle United at the Hawthorns. It was the 26th time that the Baggies had played a Premier League game on a Tuesday, and they are yet to win – this week’s result makes it 11 draws and 15 defeats. Furthermore, it was Albion’s eleventh game in the Premier League under a caretaker manager and eight of those matches have ended all square.

It seems certain that Alan Pardew will be unveiled as the Baggies’ new head coach today in time to take on his former club, Crystal Palace, on Saturday. Megson’s name was being sung around the Hawthorns last night ahead of the late equaliser, but one decision he made late on seemed to contribute to Albion’s failure to hold on. It’s perhaps unfair to single out one thing that led to the goal, but his decision to replace Gibbs with McClean was certainly an eyebrow-raiser, and it was McClean’s rash challenge that led to the free-kick from which Newcastle scored.

We are a third of the way through the season, and the current points tally is the worst for Albion since Tony Mowbray was in charge. The run up to Christmas has traditionally been a bad time for the Baggies in the Premier League – like game 14, game 15 has only produced one victory in our eleven Premier League seasons.
