West Brom v Manchester City – History and Statistics

Since Sheikh Mansour completed the takeover of Manchester City in August 2008, Manchester City have proved to be the most difficult of opponents for the Baggies.

Only twice have Albion managed to beat the Citizens since then, in a League Cup tie in 2010 and the only league victory was in the very first post-takeover meeting at the Hawthorns in December 2008. On that occasion, Luke Moore opening the scoring in the second half with his first goal for Albion. The visitors drew level when an outrageous back heel from Felipe Caicedo hit the post before deflecting off Scott Carson into the net, but Roman Bednár headed home the winner in stoppage time (pictured).

Since then, the Baggies have earned just two points against City in the league, including the draw at the Etihad last month. The only other point was earned in a 0-0 draw at the Hawthorns on Boxing Day 2011 and City have banged in eighteen goals in their six Premier League visits to the Shrine since.

In all, it is two points from a possible 54 against Manchester City in the Premier League, which is a contrast from the pre-takeover meetings with the Citizens with Albion only losing one of the first seven Premier League clashes. That followed on from the last meeting in the second tier when the Baggies thumped table-topping City 4-0 at the Hawthorns three days before 9/11. Derek McInnes, Neil Clement (2) and Scott Dobie were the scorers and, of course, both sides were promoted at the end of the season.

That was the Baggies’ biggest win over City since the seventies, but the record victory was somewhat more impressive. In September 1957, City boss, Les McDowall decided to experiment playing inside forward, Keith Marsden, in defence – it’s safe to say that it didn’t work. Ronnie Allen opened the scoring in the 21st minute and both Brian Whitehouse and Frank Griffin found the net before half time with City replying through Roy Clarke. Marsden switched back to the forward line at half time and there was hope for the visitors when Paddy Fagan made it 3-2 ten minutes into the second half. It was not to be, however, as Bobby Robson made it 4-2 a minute later and then the hosts ran riot with Griffin completing a hat trick, Allen scoring his second from the spot, Roy Horobin also scoring and Derek Kevan scoring Albion’s second penalty with six minutes left. It finished 9-2 but, far from being a precursor to a poor season for City, both teams finished in the top five come May.
