Albion haven’t won away to Manchester City since their first Premier League campaign, City’s last at Maine Road. Goals from Darren Moore and Neil Clement (pictured) earned the Baggies a 2-1 win that day, one of only three they achieved away from home that season.
After drawing on their first two visits to what was then called the City of Manchester Stadium, the Baggies have lost their subsequent nine matches at the venue conceding 26 goals in the process. Furthermore, that win at Maine Road in 2003 is Albion’s only win at City in the last 40 years.
The Citizens haven’t always had their current level of superiority over the Baggies and Albion sides of the past have enjoyed some memorable victories on City soil.
Cyrille Regis seemed to enjoy playing at Maine Road, scoring in three consecutive visits between 1978 and 1980. One game finished 2-2 while the other two resulted in 3-1 victories for the Baggies with Peter Barnes grabbing a brace on his first return to his old club to add to Cyrille’s goal in February 1980.
Back in April 1963, Jimmy Hagan’s Albion side recorded an impressive win in Moss Side as goals from Ronnie Fenton, Ken Foggo (2), Clive Clark and Alec Jackson put them 5-0 up before Alex Harley scored a late consolation goal for the hosts.
That is not the Baggies’ record win at Maine Road, however – that came three decades earlier on New Year’s Day 1934. Given the era, it is no surprise to learn that W. G. Richardson was amongst the goals – he scored a hat trick while Walter Robbins got two and Joe Carter and Teddy Sandford scored a goal apiece. The final score was 7-2 to the visitors and they completed an impressive league double a few months later with a 4-0 win at the Hawthorns although City still finished above Albion in the table!
