Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 5 games

A fifth goal of the season from Josh Maja and a superb double from Alex Mowatt leaves Karlan Grant as the only one of the Baggies’ Championship goalscorers this campaign not to have a surname beginning with ‘M’. Paddy McNair is waiting in the wings to join them!

Perhaps more importantly, the 3-0 win puts the Baggies top of the table after former leaders Sunderland were beaten at Plymouth Argyle, Albion’s next opponents. It’s Albion’s best start since 2021/22 and the first time they have topped the table since October 2021.

The last time that Albion had a goalscorer with five goals in the first five league games was back in 1998 when Lee Hughes scored two against Sheffield United and a hat trick at Port Vale in games two and three of the Division One campaign. He would go on to score 31 league goals that season. Bob Taylor scored four league goals in the first five games of the 1992/93 season, but bagged a brace in each of the next two matches – he ended up with 30 league goals in that campaign.

The last time that Albion lost game six of a second tier season, both of those players were on the field. It was in 1998 when Hughes started for the Baggies who were beaten 3-2 by Bolton Wanderers for who Taylor appeared as a substitute. Since then, Albion have won six and drawn six of their second tier games sixes!
