Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 46 games

Victory on the final day of the season was not enough to change the fact that this season’s points tally is Albion’s worst in the second tier since the 1999/2000 campaign when Gary Megson managed to save the club from relegation to the third tier on the final day. The season was one of only five previous 46 game seasons when the Baggies have not managed to win at least a third of their matches.

The result also meant that Albion managed to relegate two different teams in successive games – not sure if that has ever happened before but it would be a challenge to find out!

Next season will be the Baggies’ fifth successive season in the second tier – only twice before have they spent longer in the second tier. Between 1904 and 1911, Albion were in Division Two for seven seasons while between 1993 and 2002, the Baggies were in Division One for nine seasons. The club was in Division Two between 1938 and 1949, but the interruption of World War II meant that there were only four seasons of league football in those eleven years. Obviously, the Baggies’ longest period outside the top flight is sixteen years between 1986 and 2002 including two seasons in the third tier.

Saturday’s game was the first time that two Albion players had scored a brace in the same match since Callum Robinson and Matheus Pereira did so in the 5-2 win at Stamford Bridge in April 2021. The last time it happened at the Hawthorns was in August 2018 when Matt Phillips and Jay Rodriguez both claimed a brace in the 7-1 victory over QPR. Albion players had scored more than once in a match on five previous occasions this season – Josh Maja scored a hat trick on the opening day at QPR and also scored twice against Preston North End on New Year’s Day; Alex Mowatt scored twice at Portsmouth in September, Mikey Johnston bagged two against Bristol City in December while Grady Diangana scored two against Portsmouth in January.
