There are few positives from the goalless draw at Cardiff City, one being that James Morrison’s team recorded a clean sheet, the first by Albion since the 1-0 win over QPR in early March. However, it also made it fifteen away league games without a victory, a new club record in the second tier of English football. With the away game at Bournemouth in the FA Cup, it makes it sixteen away games without a win in all competitions, a “feat” that was last achieved in the 1994/95 season which was a run of fourteen league games and two cup games.
The failure to win at Cardiff means that it will definitely be the Baggies’ worse second tier season since the 1999/2000 campaign when they avoided relegation on the final day and earned just 49 points. Albion could yet finish in 9th, 10th or 11th in the table depending on next Saturday’s results. Their worst positional finish since 1999/2000 is 10th in 2021/22.
When the final game of the campaign has been at home, Albion haven’t lost in the second tier since 2004 when Champions Nottingham Forest beat Megson’s team 2-0 although the Baggies had already confirmed promotion and couldn’t catch Forest whatever the result. Since then, Albion beat Barnsley 7-0, drew with the same team 1-1 in 2010 when promotion had already been secured, and then drew 2-2 with QPR a decade later and still managed to finish in the top two. The last two final home games in the Championship have finished in 4-0 and 3-0 wins over Barnsley (again) and Preston North End respectively.
