Karlan Grant’s sixteenth goal of the season earned the Baggies their first victory on the road since the same player grabbed a brace at Hull City in early March. It means Albion will finish the season with six away wins and just 23 points away from home, only three more than the 20 points they earned on the road in the 1999/2000 season when they came close to relegation. Furthermore, with one game left, Albion’s total for 48 goals this season is only five more than they scored in that campaign.
That goal tally is the lowest for any Championship side in the top half of the table with Millwall’s 53 being the next lowest – Fulham, by comparison, have scored 99 goals in one match fewer.
Next weekend will see Albion host Barnsley for the final match of the season for the fourth time. The hosts have emerged victorious in just one of the previous three games, the 7-0 thrashing in 2008. The other two both finished as draws, 1-1 in 2010 and 2-2 in 1988 when Ron Atkinson’s side threw away a two goal lead thanks to goals from Robert Hopkins and Stewart Phillips with David Currie scoring two goals for the visitors in front of less than 8,500 fans at the Hawthorns.
