The Baggies lost successive league games for the first time since December when they lost back-to-back games against the same two clubs, Leicester City and Sunderland. Norwich City’s failure to beat Bristol City means that the Baggies hang on to fifth place, although only on goal difference, while Hull City’s draw with Watford means that they would need seven points in their last three games to overhaul Albion’s current points total. Coventry City, who don’t play in the league this weekend, need ten points from twelve to move ahead of the Baggies should they lose their remaining two games.
Jamie Vardy may have missed a penalty yesterday, but he went on to score his eighth goal in eleven matches against Albion. That works out at 0.73 goals per game, his best figures against any club he has played against at least ten times.
Towards the end of the 2006/07 campaign, Tony Mowbray’s Albion also lost games 43 and 44 leaving them in 5th place with 70 points with four clubs outside the top six all within two points. They went on to win their final two games, including a 7-0 win over Barnsley on the final day to secure their spot in the top six.
