Albion’s ten match unbeaten run came to an end as they failed to score for only the second time in 15 games and only the fourth time in their 22 Championship games at the Hawthorns. The victory saw Sunderland complete the league double over Albion for the first time since the 2006/07 season.
Thomas-Asante’s red card was the first shown to an Albion player since Corberán joined the club, the previous one was shown to Kyle Bartley at Millwall in October 2022 in what was Richard Beale’s last game in charge before the Spaniard took over.
The defeat leaves the Baggies still in fifth place but now only a point above Norwich City in sixth. There remains a substantial gap to sides outside the play-off places, however, with Hull City the closest at seven points behind Albion with a game in hand. Coventry City, Middlesbrough and Preston North End are a further two points back and the Baggies also have a substantial goal difference advantage over the sides below them.
Six points from their remaining three games will guarantee a play-off spot for the Baggies and it could well come down to the final game of the season against Preston North End. The Lilywhites need to play both Southampton and Leicester City before they come to the Hawthorns while Hull City are still to face both Coventry City and Ipswich Town. The Sky Blues also have to play Ipswich Town with Norwich City the only one of the six sides chasing the final two play-off places not to play a team above them in the table in the run-in.
