Albion’s play-off hopes effectively died on Friday afternoon as they were beaten by Coventry City as Bristol City and Middlesbrough both recorded victories leaving Tony Mowbray’s team six points outside the top six with only nine points available. Add the fact that the Baggies haven’t still haven’t recorded back-to-back victories since September, or a win on the road since November, and the chances of earning a play-off place seem extremely remote.
It leaves Albion with 60 points from 43 games, matching their tally from three years ago which is their lowest at this stage since the 1999/2000 campaign. In all of their 46 game seasons, Albion have only three times recorded fewer than four away wins from their first 22 away games of a campaign. In 1990/91, 1993/94 and 1994/95, the Baggies had recorded only three away wins at this stage, seasons in which they finished 23rd, 21st and 19th respectively.
No Baggies team have won their 44th game of the season since 2010 when Roberto di Matteo’s team beat Middlesbrough at the Hawthorns. In the five 46 game seasons since then, Albion have recorded three goalless draws and been beaten twice in match 44, scoring just once, in the 2-1 defeat at Leicester City last season.
