The Baggies recorded back-to-back away wins for the first time since before Christmas and remarkably moved into the top six ahead of Wednesday’s fixtures. Sunderland’s failure to beat Huddersfield Town means that Albion moved above them on goal difference and they are just two points behind Millwall with a game in hand after their home defeat by Birmingham City.
With the goals scored by Brandon Thomas-Asante and Taylor Gardner-Hickman, I believe it is the first time that two Albion players with double-barrelled surnames have scored in the the same game. Also, as Chris Lepkowski pointed out on Twitter, it is the first time the Baggies have won three successive Tuesday night league games for more than 15 years.
The only time Albion have had this many points at this stage of the season and not made the play-offs was in 1989 when Brian Talbot’s team had 65 points after 42 games but ended up with 72 and finished 9th. I suspect 72 may be enough for a top six spot this season.
