Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 41 games

The Baggies’ first win on the road since mid-January has kept alive their faint hopes of a top six spot as they now sit three points off 6th place with five games remaining. There are, however, four teams between Albion and Blackburn Rovers and sixth, although two of them, Sunderland and Norwich City, must visit the Hawthorns before the end of the campaign.

To make the play-off spots, Albion probably need to match the finish to the season achieved by Gary Megson’s 2002 side who registered 13 points from their last five games. The only other team to come close to that record in a second tier season run-in was Tony Mowbray’s title winning side of 2008 who picked up 11 points.

Jayson Molumby scored his third and fourth goals of the season, the first brace of his career. Before this season, he had never scored more than once in an entire campaign, let alone a single game. His only other goals were at QPR for Millwall in July 2020 and for Albion at Middlesbrough last season. He is the fifth Baggie to bag a brace in this campaign after Jed Wallace at Huddersfield Town in August, Okay Yokuşlu against Preston North End in December, Brandon Thomas-Asante at Chesterfield in January and Daryl Dike against Middlesbrough in February. All four of Molumby’s goals this season have been scored from rebounds, either from the ‘keeper or the crossbar.

Dwight Gayle’s hat trick against Preston North End in game 42 four years ago is the last treble scored by an Albion player. Gayle scored 24 goals that season – he has scored eight goals in the four years since then.
