Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 41 games

Albion’s inconsistent form showed itself again on Saturday as they suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Stoke City. It leaves them eight points of the play-off places with five games remaining.

Game 41 in 2006/07 was also a home game with the Potters and the result was the same, a 3-1 win for the visitors and Albion also scored an own goal. On that occasion, Jonathan Greening put through his own net either side of goals from Ricardo Fuller and Jon Parking as City took a 3-0 half time lead – Jason Koumas scored a consolation for Tony Mowbray’s side in the second half.

Next up for Steve Bruce’s team is Blackpool at the Hawthorns – the Baggies have not lost game 42 of a league season since 1998 when Denis Smith’s side took the lead against Stockport County at Edgeley Park through Lee Hughes, only to see goals from Kevin Cooper and Chris Byrne turn the match around for the hosts, then managed by Gary Megson. That result left Albion in 12th place with 56 points.

As an aside, that 1997/98 season saw the Baggies finish in tenth place in Division One, probably somewhere similar to where they will finish this season. As a contrast, Manchester City finished 22nd and were relegated to Division Two while the likes of Oxford United, Tranmere Rovers, Bury and, of course, Stockport County all finished in relatively comfortable mid-table places in the second tier – Bury have since gone into liquidation, Stockport are now non-league while Oxford and Tranmere have both had spells outside the Football League since then.
