Darnell Furlong’s late screamer extended Albion’s unbeaten record to eight games and, with the clubs immediately below them in the table all losing, the Baggies have actually improved their position in relation to their play-off rivals despite dropping points in a game that they would have expected to win.
It was the first time that Carlos Corberán’s team had recovered from a two-goal deficit since they won 3-2 at Luton Town in January last year, and the first time at the Hawthorns since March 2022 when quickfire goals from Karlan Grant and Andy Carroll saw Steve Bruce’s team earn a point against Huddersfield Town in the last six minutes. Previous to that, you have to go back to October 2019 when Matheus Pereira’s late equaliser completed the comeback from a 2-0 deficit to Barnsley.
The point leaves Albion on 68 points, one more that Tony Mowbray’s teams had at the same stage in both 2007 and 2008 – the first one finished in 4th spot, the second won the title! It is also the same tally as Gary Megson’s team had in 2001 who still finished in the play-offs despite picking up just six points in the remaining six games.
The Baggies current tally of 68 points was enough to make the top six in the Championship in 2014, but the average points for the sixth place team since the second tier play-offs were first contested by the top six in 1996 is less than 74. The most was 80 points in 2017. Given that the seventh-place team, Coventry City, currently have 60 points, they would need to win all seven of their remaining games to better 80 points so it is unlikely to be that high.
