Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 40 games

Once again, with the pressure off in a game they are not expected to win, the Baggies produced another excellent performance to the frustration of fans and manager alike. Despite the three points, they remain seven points off the play-offs, although they have moved up one place to 11th, with just six games remaining.

Their points tally of 57 points from 40 games is ten lower than in any second tier campaign since 1999/2000 although this season’s team have amassed more points at the Hawthorns than at this stage in either of their last two Championship campaigns, and the 34 points earned in the 2019/20 season was from 21 home games rather than the 19 played so far in 2021/22.

Twenty years ago, game 40 was a crucial 1-0 win at the City Ground when Bob Taylor headed in after Neil Clement’s free kick had been saved (I remember it well). Gary Megson’s team took 16 points from the last 18 available – if Steve Bruce’s team did the same, it would put them on 73 points, which is probably not enough. Realistically, it’s difficult to see this side putting together any sort of consistent run of form.
