A 13th home victory and a 16th clean sheet (ten of which have come at the Hawthorns) for Carlos Corberán’s team keeps them in fifth place with eight games of the season remaining. No Albion team in our comparison seasons has earned more points at the Hawthorns at this stage of the season with only the 2006/07 team able to match the tally of 42 points from 19 home games. Di Matteo’s 2009/10 side are the only other one to have won 13 of their opening 19 league matches at the Hawthorns.
This season’s tally of 66 points from 38 games is ten points better that at the same stage last season and is three points more than Tony Mowbray’s title-winning team of 2008 had amassed at this point. Di Matteo’s team had 75 points at the same stage, seven fewer than this season’s leaders, Leicester City, have earned from one fewer game.
Game 39 has not been kind for the Baggies in recent seasons, particularly on the road. They haven’t won game 39 away from home since 2004 when it took a stoppage time winner from Geoff Horsfield to claim all three points with a dramatic 3-2 victory at Portman Road.
