A stunning second half display saw the Baggies earn their sixth away win of the season and open up a five point game on the teams in 6th and 7th spot.
Corberán’s Baggies move on to 63 points which is one more that Mowbray’s title-winning side in 2008, although that year, Albion were in fourth spot and just five points off the lead with two games in hand – this season, Leicester City are a remarkable 19 points ahead of Corberán’s team.
Four years ago, it was at this stage of the season that football was halted as a result of the COVID pandemic. Slaven Bilić’s team were in second spot with 70 points, a point behind Leeds United, six points clear of Fulham in third and ten points ahead of Brentford and Nottingham Forest below them. Despite holding on to second place, they would pick up only 13 points in the final nine games of the campaign, fewer than the 14 points that Steve Bruce’s side picked up in 2022 and well below the 23 points that Megson’s side picked up from the 27 available in the run-in of 2001/02 campaign.
The four goals scored at Huddersfield means that the Baggies have scored 28 goals on the road this season. Surprisingly, only twice in the comparison seasons has an Albion side scored more away goals at this stage of the season – Di Matteo’s team in 2009/10 had found the net on 35 occasions away from home by this stage (in 19 matches) while in 2018/19, the Baggies had scored 30 goals away from home under Darren Moore although game 37 was the first under caretaker boss, Jimmy Shan, a 3-0 home win over Swansea City.
