Tony Mowbray’s Baggies produced another excellent away display against one of the division’s best sides to claim a well-earned point at Turf Moor. The only black mark to the night was the error by Albion ‘keeper, Joe Wildsmith, that gifted the hosts their equaliser after John Swift’s brilliant free kick had given the visitors the lead. That was the first goal conceded by the Clarets on their own patch since December and only the eleventh goal they have conceded in the entire league campaign.
With Coventry City surprisingly losing at Derby County, the point moved Albion above the Sky Blues into fifth place on goal difference and they remain two points clear of Bristol City in seventh who earned a point away to Sheffield United. The Baggies have drawn every match they have played against the current top four this season with just one such fixture, Sunderland at the Hawthorns, left to play.
It was the Baggies’ 17th draw of the season which is a new club record for the first 37 games of a campaign. In 2004/05, Robert Earnshaw’s penalty earned Bryan Robson’s team a point at Old Trafford which was Albion’s 16th draw of that particular season which, of course, had only one more game to go. The previous record at this stage of a 46 game season was fifteen in 1999/2000 – Megson’s team would draw another four times before the end of the campaign including a remarkable 4-4 game with Bolton Wanderers.
Albion haven’t lost game 38 of a second tier campaign since 2007 when Mowbray’s team were beaten 3-2 at home to Crystal Palace.
