Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 36 games

Albion escaped from Loftus Road with a point to move their points tally on to 60 points and extend their unbeaten away record to four games.

Corberán’s Baggies this season have one fewer point than Darren Moore’s team had at the same stage in 2018/19 following a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town – despite the team being in 4th place, that proved to be Big Dave’s last game in charge, and Albion ended the season in the same position, losing the play-off semi-final to Aston Villa.

A few more points at this stage have seen Albion sides promoted automatically in the past. In 2002, Megson’s side had 63 points while Mowbray’s title-winning team in 2008 had 62 with ten games to go. The record tally at this stage in our comparison seasons is 69 amassed by Di Matteo’s team in 2010 and Bilić’s team a decade later. Both teams were promoted as runners up but Di Matteo’s team earned an impressive 22 points from the remaining ten games compared to the 14 points earned by the Croatian’s team either side of the COVID break.

Albion haven’t lost game 37 of a second tier season since they were surprisingly beaten 4-1 at home by Leicester City in 2008. One meaningless fact is that this weekend will be the first time in our comparison seasons that the Baggies will have played game 37 further north than the West Midlands, with their only trip north from the Hawthorns being to Molineux in 2007.
