Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 36 games

A game of firsts for the Baggies this season – a first red card during the game (Kyle Bartley’s was handed out after the full time whistle) and a first penalty of the season. Albion were last awarded a penalty in the home game against Preston North End in May, a spot kick that was successfully converted by Alex Mowatt.

The Baggies were awarded five penalties last season, all of which were scored, and the last one missed was by Brandon Thomas-Asante against Rotherham United in December 2022, but he successfully put away the rebound. The last meaningful miss was by Karlan Grant at Swansea City in January 2022 – Steven Benda saved his attempt with the score at 2-2 and the Swans scored a winner eight minutes later.

The three points kept the Baggies just a point behind in form Coventry City, who won their fifth successive game, while none of the five teams immediately outside the top six were able to win meaning that there are now only two sides within three points of Albion.

Albion’s defensive record continues to be impressive with only Gary Megson’s promotion-winning sides in 2002 and 2004 having conceded fewer goals at this stage. This season’s top three are all better off, of course, with Tuesday’s opponents on course to smash the 46-game second tier record currently held by Albion’s side from 2001/02. Having drawn every game against the current top four this season, I’m sure Baggies fans will be happy to be unbeaten at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening against a side that is on a 23-match unbeaten record having conceded just once in their last fourteen league matches.
