It was a rather uninspiring and occasionally nervy game against Wigan Athletic but it is one that produced a hugely important result to lift Albion up to ninth, within four points of the top six. It is only the second time in the last ten second tier seasons that an Albion side has been outside of the top five at this stage of the season and, in that period, only last season did it take them longer to reach 50 points. As a comparison, under Slaven Bilić in the 2019/20 season, the Baggies hit the 50 point mark after just 23 games.
It extends Albion’s unbeaten home streak to ten games in all competitions, during which time they have conceded just one goal. Only once before has an Albion side conceded just one goal in a run of ten home games – from 6th January to 31st March 1923, Albion conceded just once in ten home matches, in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United, although that run did feature three 0-0 draws including one against Division Three (North) side, Stalybridge Celtic, in the first round of the FA Cup. Somewhat ominously, that run came to an end with a 2-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield Town, albeit the Terriers were a much tougher prospect in the 1920s finishing third in Division One that season and winning the title in the following three campaigns!
Another noteworthy moment in the data below is that, on 6th March 1999, Albion beat Oxford United 2-0 at the Hawthorns in game 36 of the season. Enzo Maresca, who is currently one of Pep Guardiola’s assistant coaches at Manchester City, scored the second that afternoon, the first of five goals he scored for the Baggies. It was his transfer to Juventus in January 2000 for £4.3m that effectively saved the club from going into administration. Let’s hope that Albion aren’t ever again as close to going under as they were back then – promotion would certainly help on that front!
