Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 34 games

Albion recorded their first clean sheet of 2025 and their first since Carlos Corberán left the club before Christmas. It was important given that the second goal didn’t arrive until deep into stoppage time. The three points moved the Baggies back into fifth place following Blackburn’s defeat at Swansea, but they are still eleven points behind fourth placed Sunderland, nineteen points off the top two and twenty-one points behind leaders, Leeds United, who they visit next weekend.

Only once in our comparison seasons have Albion lost fewer than seven games at this stage of the season, Slaven Bilić’s team in 2019/20 had lost only four at this stage, and only Gary Megson’s two promotion-winning teams had conceded fewer goals than the 31 that the Baggies have conceded in the current campaign. Megson’s 2002 team, who currently hold the record for the fewest goals conceded in a 46-game second tier season, had let in 24 goals at this stage – Burnley have let in just nine goals so far this season and are on course to smash that record, while both Leeds United (20) and Sheffield United (23) have let in fewer than Megson’s team.

Looking ahead to next weekend, the Baggies have won game 35 in each of their last four second tier campaigns – the last time they didn’t win was in 2019 when they travelled to Elland Road as they will on Saturday, but will hopefully fare better than Darren Moore’s team who were beaten 4-0, a game that also took place on 1st March!
