Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 32 games

Southampton brought an end to Albion’s seven match unbeaten home record in the Championship with a 2-0 victory at the Hawthorns. It leaves the Baggies still in 5th place ahead of Saturday’s matches and, with a four point gap over the teams below them, they will remain there for the weekend.

It was the Baggies tenth defeat of the season – other than the last two campaigns, no Albion second tier side had been beaten that many times at this stage since the 1999/2000 season. Similarly, their points tally of 52 is the worst since that season, excluding the last two campaigns. However, Corberán’s team remain seven points better off than at the same stage last season.

Looking ahead to game 33 away to Plymouth Argyle, there have been a couple of memorable victories on the road at the same stage in the past. Back in 1997, a Paul Peschisolido hat trick helped Albion to a 4-2 win at Carrow Road that was Ray Harford’s first victory as Baggies boss having replaced Alan Buckley. Four years ago, a 94th minute goal for Jake Livermore won a thrilling 3-2 match at Loftus Road for what proved to be Darren Moore’s final victory as Albion boss – he was sacked thee games later.
