Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 32 games

A disappointing home performance saw the Baggies fail to score at the Hawthorns for the first time since November and ended their eleven match unbeaten run on their own turf. Albion remain in the top six but they are now fifteen points off fourth-placed Sunderland and there are nine clubs below them within seven points. In terms of points, the Baggies are closer to bottom-placed Luton Town than they are to leaders, Leeds United.

It’s remarkable that the teams in 5th and 6th in the league table are actually in 18th (Blackburn Rovers) and 12th (Albion) in the 12-match form table while the top four clubs in the league table occupy the top four positions in that form table.

The Baggies’ points total of 47 points at this stage is the third lowest in the second tier this century with only the 21/22 (46) and 23/23 (45) campaigns yielding fewer points at the same stage, neither of which saw Albion finish in the top six. Interestingly, in those campaigns, the teams in 6th place had 50 and 49 points at that point in the season which further demonstrates how the sides outside the top four are underperforming.

Albion have drawn 14 games this season which remains the highest in the division but, interestingly, they have not recorded a draw since Tony Mowbray took charge of the team, winning two and losing three. That is the first time they have gone five games without a draw since they won four and lost two in games 3 to 8 of the campaign, a run that was followed by ten draws in eleven games! The Baggies are also yet to record a clean sheet under Mowbray having last shut out the opponents in Corberán’s last match in charge against Bristol City.

They head to Millwall on Saturday on a run of eight away games (nine including the FA Cup trip to Bournemouth) without a win since they beat Hull City 2-1 at the MKM Stadium in November.
