Albion’s eleventh home win of the season was secured thanks to a fourteenth clean sheet of the season, a tally that is now matched by Leeds United, and one of the quickest Baggies goals in history.
Timed at 29 seconds, Mikey Johnston’s first Baggies goal on his full debut is probably the quickest Albion goal at the Hawthorns since Ally Brown scored after 22 seconds against Ipswich Town on the opening day of the 1978/79 season. Lee Hughes scored after 11 seconds in Gary Megson’s first game in charge at Edgeley Park in March 2000, but the quickest recorded goal for the Baggies was in December 1924 when the first of the four goals that George James scored in a 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest was timed at just 5 seconds!
The victory puts the Baggies on 52 points from 31 games, just two points behind Gary Megson’s promotion winning team of 2001/02 and Tony Mowbray’s title winning team of 2007/08. However, the Baggies were just one point off second and first place respectively in those two seasons, while in the current campaign, they are 14 points behind second-placed Leeds United and a massive 26 points behind leaders Leicester City!
The more realistic target of a top six spot is well within reach – Corberán’s Baggies are seven points better off than they were at the same stage last season, when they were 10th with 45 points (as Preston North End are currently). An additional seven points at the end of the last campaign would have had them comfortably in 5th spot.
