Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 31 games

Ben Brereton Díaz’s late equaliser brought Albion’s winning home run to and end but they remain unbeaten in their last eight games at the Hawthorns in all competitions. It leaves the Baggies down in 10th place but still just two points off the play-offs which is set up for an exciting run-in!

With 15 games to go, the Baggies probably need to get about 30 points to secure a play-off place. The average points required for sixth place is 74.1 since the 2000/01 season but it has been as high as 81 (2003) and as low as 70 (2008). In 2014, the sixth placed-team after 31 games was Reading, and they had 47 points as do sixth placed Watford today. That season, 72 points was good enough for a play-off spot for Brighton & Hove Albion, so it may be a similar total for this campaign.

The draw with Blackburn was Carlos Corberán’s 15th league game in charge of Albion and they have achieved 31 points in that time. A repeat of that form would, of course, see the Baggies reach 76 points which would, I believe, be enough to get into the top six.
