It was the late late show at the Hawthorns with two stoppage time goals, and a red card after the final whistle, which resulted in a deserved three points for the Baggies. It was Albion’s first stoppage time winner since Karlan Grant scored in the 93rd minute to beat Blackpool at home on Good Friday in 2022 and the first meaningful second half stoppage time goal since Darnell Furlong’s 91st minute equaliser against Watford at the Hawthorns on Easter Monday last year. Albion’s last stoppage time goal of any sort since Alex Mowatt’s 93rd minute strike to make it 3-0 at Portsmouth in September.
Adam Armstrong opened the scoring with a debut goal, the Baggies first debutant scorer by a new signing since Brandon Thomas-Asante scored a 98th minute equaliser against Burnley in September 2022. Jovan Malcolm scored on his first senior appearance for the club in the FA Cup against Aldershot Town in January 2024.
The victory moves Albion up into 5th place with 47 points, five fewer than they had at the same stage last season albeit they were still in 5th place. The Baggies had more points after 31 games in 1989 (48) and 1998 (49) but failed to finish in the top six at the end of the season.
