Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 29 games

Grady Diangana’s goal earned the Baggies a seventh successive home victory without conceding a goal for the first time since 2002. Gary Megson’s team won the first seven home games of the year starting with a 4-0 victory over Stokport County and ending with a 5-0 win over Portsmouth – the five home games in between were all won 1-0 including the FA Cup wins over Leicester City and Cheltenham Town. No Albion side has ever kept more than seven successive clean sheets in home games.

The last time Albion kept six successive clean sheets in home league games was in 1977, while the last time they won six games in a row at home was in 2019, if you include the play-off semi-final second leg win over Aston Villa as a league game. For regular season league games, it was back in 2010 under Roberto di Matteo. The combination of the two is a new club record – the previous best for successive home league wins without conceding was five, last achieved by Tony Mowbray’s team stretching across two seasons – the last two games of the 2006/07 season, again including a play-off semi-final, and the first three of 2007/08.

The club record for consecutive home wins is eleven in the 1948/49 season under Jack Smith. In the league, the record is also 11, achieved in the 1906/07 season.

The victory moves Albion up into 5th place ahead of the weekend’s games. This campaign remains the worst second tier season since 1999/2000, one point behind Valérien Ismaël’s team from last season. Game 29, a 2-0 defeat at Millwall, proved to be the Frenchman’s final game in charge.
