The Baggies’ biggest win over Blackburn Rovers since 1961 saw them maintain the six point gap to Leeds United in 4th place, while results elsewhere means that the team in 6th place are now Coventry City who are five points behind Albion.
Brandon Thomas-Asante came close to registering a second career hat-trick but he didn’t quite get a toe on the ball as Hyam bundled the ball into his own net, but he becomes the first Baggie to score more than once in any game this season. It is the second time he has bagged a brace in an Albion shirt having scored twice at Chesterfield in the FA Cup last year.
Corberán’s team have more points at this stage than Megson’s 2001/02 promotion winning side while they are level with Valérien Ismaël’s team from two years ago whose victory over Peterborough United in game 27 proved to the last win of the Frenchman’s reign. It is the third time that Albion have had 45 points from 27 games in out comparison campaigns, the other occasion being in the 1888/89 season, and each time it has seen them placed fifth.
In the last three second tier seasons, Albion have been beaten in game 28 although in the previous six campaigns they were unbeaten in the same game. Some of those were particularly high scoring matches including a 3-3 draw with Cardiff City, 3-2 wins over Blackpool and Luton Town and a 4-0 win over Stockport County on New Year’s Day 2002.
