Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 27 games

Chris Brunt’s final game in charge finished all square but it really should have been a victory given the number of chances that the hosts had in the second half. It highlights the deficiencies in the squad that Tony Mowbray will have to manage and, with the help of Andrew Nestor and Ian Pearce, hopefully address before the month is out.

Albion’s 14th draw of the season, one more than they had at this stage in the 1999/2000 campaign which was the joint club record before this season. In 2013/14. a draw against Fulham for Pepe Mel’s team in game 27 of the Premier League season was the Baggies’ 13th of the season; they had won only four.

Looking ahead to Tuesday night, Mowbray’s first game in charge at his old club, Middlesbrough, game 28 has not been very good for the Baggies in recent Championship seasons, losing in each of the last four campaigns. Their last success in match 28 was in January 2019 when goals from Jay Rodriguez and and Sam Field gave Darren Moore’s side a 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers to lift them back to 3rd place in the Championship.

A memorable victory in game 28 came during Mogga’s first spell with the club against Luton Town at the Hawthorns. A wonderful solo goal from Jason Koumas had given Albion the lead on the stroke of half time but second half strikes from Keith Keane and Warren Feeney had given the visitors the lead as the game entered its final few minutes. Cometh the hour, cometh the man in the shape of Kevin Phillips. His equaliser with two minutes left was incredible as he some how kept control of the ball in the box despite three players trying to clear it – it left Hatters’ boss, Mike Newell, seething as play had continued with a Luton player lying injured on the floor having come into contact with Paul Robinson. There was still time for Phillips to score the winner with a header from a Koumas free kick to send the Hawthorns faithful into raptures.
