Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 26 games

Albion’s victory over Reading means that they have recorded five successive home victories for the first time since the end of the 2018/19 season under Jimmy Shan – the home leg play-off win over Aston Villa technically made it six, albeit none of us were celebrating a victory that night!

Moreover, Carlos Corberán’s team haven’t conceded in those five games, and the last time that happened was under Tony Mowbray at the start of the 2007/08 season when the Baggies won the first four home games of the season, including a league cup tie, without conceding a goal, and the last two home games of the 2006/07 (a 7-0 win over Barnsley and a 1-0 play-off win over Wolves) made it six in total.

The last time it happened within the same season was, perhaps unsurprisingly, in the 2001/02 campaign under Gary Megson. From the 4-0 over Shrewsbury Town on New Years Day 2002 to the 5-0 win over Portsmouth in February, Albion won seven consecutive home games to nil including two FA Cup ties.

The club record for successive home wins is eleven in the 1948/49 promotion campaign under Jack Smith, which also included a cup tie. In the league, the record is also eleven in the 1906/07 Division Two campaign.

The official attendance of 25,322 is a few more than Thursday’s bumper crowd against Preston making it the highest of the season, and the highest since New Year’s Day 2020.
