Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 24 games

The Baggies sixth victory in seven games moved them up into the top half of the table, albeit for just a couple of hours until Luton Town’s victory over Norwich City moved them into 12th above Corberán’s team.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s superb second half goal made it five goals from substitutes in the last four games which suggests that the man in charge knows how to use his bench well. That goal was also assisted by a substitute in the guise of Tom Rogić.

Albion’s record of eight wins, eight draws and eight defeats is particularly aesthetically pleasing, and even more so when you realised that it consists of 4-4-4 records both home and away. Only the goal difference spoils the symmetry, thankfully in the Baggies’ favour.

The last time that Albion has the same symmetrical record after 24 games was way back in 1956 in the days of 2 points for a win giving them 24 points from 24 games. A 2-0 home defeat to Arsenal on 29th December 1956 left Albion with the 8-8-8 record and in 11th place in Division One. Remarkably, Vic Buckingham’s team finished the season with an equally symmetrical record of 14 wins, 14 draws and 14 defeats and finished in the same 11th place. That is not possible these days of course, as 46 is not divisible by 3!

Boxing Day wins for the Baggies have been fairly rare in recent years, even more so away from home. The last one was a decade ago at QPR in 2012 when a goal from Chris Brunt and an own goal by R’s ‘keeper Rob Green earned Steve Clarke’s team a 2-1 win and kept them in the Premier League top six.

The previous Boxing Day away win was way back in 1991 when a Craig Shakespeare penalty was enough to secure the points in the Third Division fixture at Springfield Park against Wigan Athletic.
