Despite suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time this season, the Baggies remain in 5th place in the Championship table with Hull City beaten at QPR. Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End also failed to win meaning that Albion’s victors, Sunderland, move into the top six two points behind Carlos Corberán’s team. With Southampton in fourth claiming a point, they move six points clear of the Baggies.
Only twice this century has an Albion side had fewer points at this stage of the campaign – last season, Corberán’s team were continuing their recovery and beat Stoke City to move onto 23 points, while in 2006, Tony Mowbray’s team lost at Hillsbrough and were in 10th place with 29 points.
No Albion side this century has lost game 21 of a second tier season with the last defeat at this stage being a 2-1 defeat at Gresty Road in 1999. In 1988, Brian Talbot’s team secured a rare victory over Stoke City in style with Gary Robson, Don Goodman and John Paskin all scoring twice in a 6-0 win – the Baggies would register just one league victory over the Potters in the next 24 years.
