Albion and Leeds pretty much cancelled each other out in the first match at the Hawthorns to leave both sides unbeaten in the league, and both probably happy with the point.
The last time the Baggies opened their home league campaign with a goalless draw was in 1975 when John Giles’ team drew 0-0 with Chelsea – they would go on to win promotion at the end of the campaign.
Corberán’s decision to switch to a back three helped to contain the visitors’ attacking threat but it had a negative impact at the other end of the field as Fellows was played at left wing back thereby reducing his ability to influence the game in the final third. I also felt that it left Maja a little isolated with Swift pushed out to the left and Grant in an unfamiliar right sided position meaning that most of Albion’s chances came from set pieces.
The return of Jed Wallace and Grady Diangana was a massive boost and it will leave Corberán with some decisions to make with none of the forward players really sparkling in this match, albeit I feel the change in system was a significant factor in that.
