Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 19 games

Carlos Corberán’s Albion recorded back-to-back victories for the first time this season to move onto 20 points, still in the bottom three but just four points off 13th-placed Sunderland. The last time Albion won three games in a row was at the start of last season under Valérien Ismaël when they won four consecutive league games after the initial opening weekend draw with Bournemouth.

The winner at Loftus Road was Kyle Bartley’s first goal for more than a year with the much-maligned centre back having last scored in the 3-0 win over Bristol City in October 2021 having not scored at all during Steve Bruce’s tenure.

The victory means that this season is no longer Albion’s worst start to a second tier season with Alan Buckley’s 1994/95 team having lost 2-0 at Notts County in game 19 leaving them second bottom of the table on 18 points.

Back in 2000, Gary Megson’s team won games 18, 19, 20 and 21 with the middle two fixtures being 3-1 home wins against Gillingham and Preston North End when Lee Hughes scored all six goals. He was the last Albion player to score hat tricks in successive games – Peter Odemwingie and Kevin Phillips both came close with a hat trick and a brace in successive games, as did Paul Peschisolido in September 1997. The previous Albion player to do that in successive league games was Jeff Astle in matches against Manchester United (6-3) and West Ham United (3-1) in April and May 1968. However, in January 1974, Tony Brown scored a hat trick in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Notts County at the Hawthorns and followed that up with all four goals in the Baggies’ next match, a 4-1 win away to County’s near neighbours, Nottingham Forest.
