Okay Yokuşlu’s first goal for the Baggies secured a massive win for Albion and registered Carlos Corberán’s first points as head coach. It moved the Baggies off the bottom of the table, for 24 hours at least, above the Spaniard’s former club, Huddersfield Town, ahead of their match at home to Sunderland on Wednesday evening.
Game 18 in the 1994/95 campaign also produced a victory for Alan Buckley’s team with Kevin Donovan, Lee Ashcroft and Bob Taylor all on the scoresheet as Oldham Athletic were defeated 3-1 at the Hawthorns. That means that the 2022/23 campaign remains the club’s worse start to a second tier season with just 17 points from the opening 18 games. As another comparison, the attendance on Tuesday evening of just under 20,000 was poor for this era, but 5,000 better than the Oldham game from 1994, which took place on a Saturday although the Birmingham Road End was being reconstructed at the time. A trip to high-flying QPR is up next with Corberán’s Baggies looking to record back-to-back wins for the first time this season, and only the second time since December last year.
